Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (long-time service) is recommended.  Running under Ubuntu 11 may result in display problems with the level scheme window in the beta and first release versions, because Ubuntu's move to eliminate X11 sometimes prevents updating of Python matplotlib windows.

''An upcoming release version will include a change from the matplotlib level scheme window to a GTK-driven window.  This is expected to resolve the graphics window updating problems in Ubuntu 11 and later versions.''

After loading a level scheme file or a saved Rachel session, if part or all of the level scheme window is not updated (shown in grey), the button "Update LS window" can be used to force redrawing of the level scheme.  However, this may be difficult if part or all of the level scheme window is obscured by other windows.  In this case, the smoothest operation can be achieved by using a large monitor or a two-monitor system where the level scheme window is never covered by another window.
