Rachel 2.0.4.beta: bug in calculated yields

Postby hayes » Thu May 26, 2011 2:17 pm

There is a bug in version 2.0.4.beta that could replace accurately integrated calculated yields with less accurate point-calculated values under certain conditions. Edit: This bug does not affect experimental yield data in memory or simulated data.

Version 2.0.5.beta prevents this problem.

"Integrated yields" calculations using "Run gosia input" will update the calculated yields accurately in version 2.0.4.

The bug-fix version is here:

This bug is still coming up in version 2.0.5.beta, and it is not clear why.

The calculated yields in memory will be overwritten with inaccurate estimated yields for point-scattering angles under some circumstances when the following actions are taken:

  • If a gosia input is viewed or saved to disk, instead of being run (i.e. if "View gosia input" or "Save gosia input" is selected instead of "Run gosia input")
  • If a gosia calculation is terminated by hitting CTRL-C

It may be apparent that the calculated yields have changed if the user plots the experimental yields vs. calculated yields before and after viewing the gosia input or saving the gosia input to disk.

The problem can be avoided by not selecting "View gosia input" or "Save gosia input" before hitting the "Go" button, i.e., by always choosing "Run gosia input" before clicking the Go button.

Until the bug is fixed, the following will correct the problem after viewing or saving the gosia input:

Re-run the "Integrated yields" function by selecting "Integrated yields" and "Run gosia input" to the left of the Go button and clicking Go. When the integrated yields function is complete, the calculated yields in memory will again be accurate.

Another notice will be sent when this bug is fixed, probably within about one week.

This bug is finally fixed in version 2.0.6.beta, sooner than expected. The new version is here:

http://www-user.pas.rochester.edu/~gosia/mediawiki/index.php/Rachel,_a_GUI_for_Gosia#How_to_get_the_Rachel_package

Release notes are being compiled here:

After upgrading to this bug-fix version, any erroneous calculated yields in memory can be recalculated accurately by selecting "Integrated yields" and "Run gosia input" and clicking "Go." After doing this and saving the session to disk, there will not be any remaining errors in the calculated yields from this bug.
